Centenary of the death of Antoni Gaudí
THE LIGHTING OF THE JESUS TOWER — SAGRADA FAMÍLIA
The lighting of the Jesus Tower at the Sagrada Família became one of the defining cultural moments in Barcelona’s contemporary history. More than the illumination of the basilica’s highest tower, it was conceived as a landmark artistic production where architecture, music, technology and spirituality merged into a single live experience shared with audiences around the world. Its cultural significance led international media to draw comparisons with the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.
At the heart of the project lay an ambitious creative challenge: to develop a contemporary artistic language capable of honouring Antoni Gaudí’s vision while speaking to a global audience. Every creative decision sought to preserve the symbolic identity of the basilica, transforming one of the world’s most celebrated architectural masterpieces into a living work of art.
The original concept, artistic vision and creative direction were conceived by Igor Cortadellas, while Igor Studio led the executive production of the entire experience. Over an eighteen-month creative process, the studio brought together every artistic and technical discipline into a single narrative, where original music, architectural lighting, drones, pyrotechnics and live cinematic storytelling became chapters of the same visual language.
An original score composed by Dani López formed the emotional foundation of the production. It was performed by hundreds of musicians and singers from some of Spain’s most distinguished musical institutions, including the Orchestra and Chorus of the Gran Teatre del Liceu conducted by Josep Pons, the Escolania de Montserrat, Cor Veus – Amics de la Unió de Granollers and other leading ensembles. Music did not accompany the experience; it became its narrative engine, guiding every moment of the performance.
Broadcast live to an international audience, the event generated exceptional worldwide media attention. Organisations including the BBC, CNN, The New York Times, Le Monde, Euronews, RAI, The Guardian, La Repubblica, El País, La Vanguardia, Reuters and the Associated Press, among many others, featured the production, recognising both its artistic ambition and its extraordinary visual impact. The event achieved a potential global media reach exceeding 523 million people, while the Sagrada Família’s official channels recorded more than 28 million views during the first days following the premiere.
Beyond celebrating the completion of a new architectural landmark, the production established itself as one of the great shared cultural moments in the city’s recent history. It demonstrated how music, light and architecture can transcend language, creating an experience capable of connecting audiences across cultures, generations and beliefs. The project further reinforced Igor Studio and Igor Cortadellas as internationally recognised creators of large-scale live cultural experiences where artistic vision, technological innovation and emotional storytelling converge.
